The Huawei P8 might not be as popular as other big named brands out there, but it certainly is one of the best Flagship to come out of 2015. The P8 and P8 Max are the latest Smartphones from the Ascend family, but now they removed the Ascend Moniker. At half the price compared to other Flagships in the market, the Huawei P8 is the best price to performance ratio of any phone in the market right now.
Huawei P8 is not only fast but also offers one of the best Camera’s available, even rivaling big name brands. Huawei has taken a huge step especially that most of their advertising is geared towards their advance and almost DSLR like performance camera. The Sony developed camera offers excellent performance especially at low light. Huawei also promotes their new feature called “Light Painting”, which takes unique and great pictures. (see promotional video below)
Certainly the camera is one of the phone’s best feature, Huawei spared no expense and allows Photographers to take the Phone for a spin. In terms of specs, the Camera is a 13 megapixel SONY Exmor RS with RGBW, this means 4 colors are available and at low light the pictures will not oversaturate. Also Huawei has boasted that the OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) of the P8 is better than the iPhone 6 Plus. It can handle up to 1.2 degrees motion shift compared to the 0.6 degrees of the iPhone 6 Plus.
Aside from the beastly camera, the phone is powered by the latest Hisilicon Kirin 930 Octa Core Chipset accompanied by Mali-T678 GPU. Compared to its bigger brother:
Slightly Faster Hisilicon Kirin 935 2.2GHz Octa Core
Giant 6.8 inch, IPS, 1080p display
3 GB RAM and 64 GB storage
4360mAh battery (reverse charge mode) or Powerbank mode
In terms of performance, the Kirin 930 is a tad bit slower compared to the Snapdragon 810, but the Kirin 930 and 935 excels in terms of efficiency, battery life and has no issues in terms of Overheating, which Snapdragon 810 clearly has.
The phone runs the latest Emotion UI 3.1 (based on Android 5.0 Lollipop), the proprietary OS has a vague similarity to iOS and iPhone users will be familiar with its layout. What is good, is that Huawei has made the OS clean and fast, without any clutter or junk which you normally see on most phones.
The display is a little bit bigger than the Samsung Galaxy S6, also the screen is not Quad HD, it is only FHD or 1080p but is one of the best 1080p display in the market today, the colors are great with great contrast and color reproduction, no tinting and also comes with built in options to change the temperature colors of the screen.
In terms of Network support, the models and supported frequencies may vary depending on the region. Here is the comparison:
4G: TDD LTE: B38/B39/B40/B41 (2555MHz~2655MHz) – china only
The phone design is uncannily reminiscent of iPhone 6, which is not entirely bad. In terms of layout, there are no Capacitive buttons, the only tactile keys are the volume rocker and the power buttons. The phone is Unibody and is also super thin at just 6.4 mm even rivaling iPhone 6. The body is mostly of Aluminum material but is well built. The phone is premium built, a quality which Huawei continues on all its Flagship devices. Furthermore, the phone also comes with built in 2680mAh battery, a bit small compared to the 4360mAh of its bigger brother, but battery performance is more admirable, lasting a day and a half at least on standard usage thanks to its more efficient Chipset and built in Power Management tools.
Overall, a phone which excels in a lot of things, this includes great looks (although a bit iPhone-like), excellent camera and great performance. Also the price is half that of what you pay for a Flagship phone nowadays. Thus, you should not overlook the P8 or if you prefer the bigger P8 Max. It is a great alternative to other big name brands available and in terms of quality and reliability, their names are also on top of the list.
