Bigger Screen, Bigger Battery and Dual 13 MP Rear Camera

Basically you can easily sum up the relevant upgrades of the Mi5s Plus over the non-plus version. It is has now pledge into the Phablet category with a 5.7 inch 1080p display compared to 5.2 inch and the battery capacity has increased to 3800mAh. Another feature you will be interested at is the Dual Cameras at the rear. It is quite different from the Bokeh feature of the Xiaomi Redmi Pro. In such, two sensors are available, one for RGB or Color and the other for Monochrome. The said combination is said to offer better image photos, in terms of deeper contrast, vivid colors and an overall better image quality. However, that looks good only on paper.

  • The Dual 13 megapixel camera doesn’t really offer much in terms of quality, nor much improvement when you remove the feature entirely.
  • The shutter speed slows down when the feature is turned on
  • 4K video stutters and has focus issues, there is also no OIS (Optical Image Stabilization)
  • Poor Low Light Performance
  • 1080p also lacks OIS, even though the Mi5s (non plus version) has it available
  • The Xiaomi Mi5s with the SonyIMX378 Sensor offers much better camera quality and performance

Key Features or Highlights of the Xiaomi Mi5s Plus:

  • Bigger Display and Battery compared to the Xiaomi Mi 5s
  • Snapdragon 821 is blistering fast and the Adreno 530 can run the latest games with ease
  • 4 GB RAM and 64 GB UFS 2.0 Storage
  • Dual 13 MP Cameras (Standard RGB and a Monochrome sensor)
  • UFS (Universal Flash Storage) – Much faster than eMMC
  • International ROM (MIUI 8.0) – based on Android 6.0
  • MIUI offers an iOS feel to it
  • 5.7 inch IPS 1080p Display with high brightness and performance
  • Fast Connectivity – 4G LTE, Dual Band WiFi, VoLTE NFC and accurate GPS
  • USB Type C with Fast Charging support
  • Good Loudspeaker performance and
  • Accurate Fingerprint Scanner
  • 8 hours plus battery life or a good 2 days of casual use

Weaknesses:

  • The Dual Camera Performance isn’t really anything spectacular – not really a big improvement when it comes to photo and video quality
  • The Xiaomi Mi5s with the SonyIMX 378 camera sensor offers much better photos
  • No MicroSD Expansion support

In summary, it is just bigger, but not entirely better

I was expecting the 13 MP camera to offer much better option to the non-plus version. But what you get is just a bigger phone and longer battery life. If you are a fan of Phablets, then I think the Mi5s will suit you. But in choosing over the Xiaomi Mi5s and Mi5s Plus, the Mi5s edges because of the SonyIMX378 Camera. Although both cameras don’t offer OIS at 4K recording.
